Artist's Comments

Blaze in the woods. Furry style again. I actually like how the background came out. It's been a while since I've done a full picture.

pretty pleased with how this one came out. The lighting's off, but I think that's it. Full crits please

Cute!

There's a bit too much fur so he looks a bit insubstantial.
The tooth would have been way better not visible or closer to the front of the muzzle... have you ever seen an animal with its back tooth sticking out?
Excellent eyes and expression.
The background is just spectacular... very breathtaking (do you have a walkthrough/tutorial for this? If so, can you post it? I'm quite interested since I have trouble with that kind of thing).
Great job avoiding lines in the picture.
As you said, the shading is off, but at least you noticed.
The feathers came out well but it would have been nice to differentiate them more from the fur (did you use a "furry brush"? Use those for fur--of course--and use smooth brushes for feathers to keep them different... if that's what you did, then you exaggerated on the smudging of the feathers). They came out quite well, however.

The top of the hind legs is very well executed although the bottom part (with the toes/paw) is waaaay too large. I've ever seen an animal with toes bigger than its thigh. The random beige streaks in the green fur look out of place so maybe a bit of blur could have helped.

Overall, this is a wonderful picture packed with emotion and the background really makes the whole thing look beautiful. Great job! Submit this to the AG now... I want to know what you win :)

Both of my wrists are injured. Please bear with me if I leave a brief/wordless comment instead of a critical essay or if I favorite your work with no comment. I cannot really type/ use a computer on my own because of this.
Thank you for understanding.

I color over the lines :) I don't use a furry brush. I do it the long way, unfortunately :/ I use a regular brush tool and use the smudge tool, and stroke over and over and over. The 'toes' are actually part of the lower part of the hind leg, but I see what you mean.

No tuturial, sorry, but I'll try explain it. The b/g, I look at other art for references. I try make it very impressionistic. It's pretty much 'layering' layers of the woods on top of each other. The furthest part is fuzziest. For the foliage in the back, I use different brushes and then blur. The closer the plant is to the front, the darker and more detailed I make it. A good note is to make sure the b/g 'pulls together' with the main subject. A lot of times in many pics, the subject seems to stick out too much. The main thing for me is to blur, blur, blur, and achieve an overall look. I know this isn't the best explaination, so go ahead and ask if you need any clarifications. I hope it helps :)

Thanks for the info ^^ The background thing really helps.
I normally stink at backgrounds once you see my art (when I upload it... eventually).
I'd like to see your critique of two certain pictures :)
I think a furry brush would really help, and some basic ones come with Photoshop (if that's the program you use). Wow... I'm so glad I'm watching you!

awwww even though i suppose he's trying to look tough, the tooth adds cuteness to it XD

i love how fuzzy and smooth your fur always looks ^_^ the front left leg looks slgithly off though *hates legs and paws for the reason that they're always hard to do*

Very cool how the background is like impression art. It gives the pic and overall soft feel. The anatomy could be brushed up on the legs and feet, though I have to tell you that getting feet very atomically correct and making them fuzzy is a hard feat. I like to get alot of detail into the legs and feet, especially in a pic like this with so much tension in the pose. Its a great pose too. And the colors work really well. It looks very unified
